Position summary

The Tool Designer develops stamping die and fixture designs to be used in prototype and production through the application of stamping fundamentals, engineering, applied research, and design for reliability and manufacturability (DRM) principles. Maintains and streamlines CAD system. Develops and maintains print and document control systems.  Works with others to enhance the company's overall technical expertise. Develops new customers as well as maintains a positive working relationship with existing customers.

Essential Job Functions                                                                       

  • Subject matter expert in: stamping and fixture design.
  • Designs metal stamping dies, fixtures, and related equipment per Meier engineering standards and streamlines die designing, building, and debugging through innovative techniques, systems, and equipment.
  • Works closely with the Quality team and designs inspection fixtures that will be used for part inspection
  • Perform FMEA to reduce or eliminate risks, and to design for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Create and maintain material, heat treat, and coating specifications, and other outside material/process specifications as required.
  • Create and maintain internal manufacturing drawings for inspection and other purposes.
  • Designs tooling/fixtures for automation and other secondary processes, e.g. laser welding fixture.
  • Provide expertise during tooling debug, process development and qualification of production development projects
  • Interfaces with customer's project engineers to understand piece part function and critical areas and write the manufacturing processes of upcoming production projects.  Works with customers to solve part print design related problems.  Keeps others informed of customer requirements up front as they change
  • Develops new potential customers.  Builds and maintains a positive working relationship with existing customers.  Keeps others informed of customer requirements up front as they change.  Understands the manufacturing capability and capacity of the company.  Understands tooling and manufacturing processes that relate to the industry.  Determines capability and suitability of potential upcoming projects.  Assist in quoting of tooling and production projects
  • Maintains CAD software and hardware.  Maintains materials, records, and resources in a documented system to enable others to use these materials, records, and resources.  Maintains print and document control systems.  Develops and updates existing design formulas and results data
  • Displays a natural curiosity about continuously improving designs and manufacturing processes.  Develops and applies creative thinking and creative problem solving skills.  Exhibits a commitment to enhancing the company's overall technical expertise and competitiveness on an ongoing basis.  Works with others to mentor in areas of expertise. 
  • Understands the stamping process.  Seeks feedback on performance of tools by spending time with technicians during die's capability and production runs.  Uses feedback to improve design, build and debug processes
  • Responsible for adherence to project schedules as established by project management and/or Engineering Manager.
  • Keeps job skills current as technology changes by reading industry periodicals and books, attending trade shows, learning from cassette tapes, videos, etc. Successfully completes additional classroom training as needed.
  • Manage outsourced design work with preferred subcontractors ensuring internal design processes are still followed and design documents are completed to Meier standards.
  • Monitors the utilization of employee safety and OE programs
  • Partners with the other business segments: sales/marketing, customer service, engineering, quality, and finance
  • Understands customer needs and the core business markets we serve
  • Ensures business systems are implemented, maintained, and functioning properly
  • Participates in required company meetings
  • Maintains an organized work area (5S)
  • Participates in the Operational Excellence Program
  • Supports and complies with the company's Quality System, ISO, and medical device requirements
  • Completes all other work duties as assigned

 

Minimum Requirements, Education & Experience (incl. KSA's and certifications)

 

  • Two year degree in Die Design or equivalent
  • Training in Blueprint reading, GD&T, SPC and precision measurement
  • Coursework in shop mathematics, physics, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, technical writing
  • Experience: minimum of four (4) years in a design role
  • Proficient in 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD), preferably Solidworks or Solid Edge.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the metal stamping industry and practices
  • Knowledge of tooling and product materials and their applications.
  • Understanding of toolroom machine technologies and capabilities.
  • Understanding of die sensors and their applications.
  • Demonstrated skill applying Lean concepts and principles.
  • Basic understanding of the functions of stamping presses.
  • Experience working independently under pressure with multiple deadlines
  • A demonstrated ability to effectively make decisions; set clear measurable and aggressive objectives for projects and programs; break complex problems into manageable tasks; and define end dates and meet deadlines
  • Has developed advanced verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and team building skills to create effective working relationships with suppliers, customers and co-workers to create effective working relationships with suppliers, customers and coworkers
  • Ability to consistently achieve short and long term business results

Desirable Criteria & Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Logopress and design simulation experience
  • PDM experience
  • Knowledge of Medical metal stamping industry, and ISO 13485
